Albuca
Typically yellow or white flowers, three tepals extending and three forming a tube like a snowdrop. Narrow grass-like foliage, with some species having more interesting contorted leaves. Over 150 species from across Africa to the Arabian peninsula, so most are not hardy. A few will survive in a well-drained soil, in a full sun, or very suitable for pot culture.
Little or no wildlife value in this country as the inner tepals are wrapped closely around the stamens restricting access by pollinators. In their native locations however, leaf-cutter bees are known to cut holes in the flowers to access the pollen.
