The flower-spikes of this sculptural plant are very similar to those of A. spinosus, but the handsome glossy leaves are broader, less cut and not prickly. In summer white flowers, with pink hues, shelter under a purple spiny bract. Happy in dappled shade as well as sun and thriving on lighter soils. A native of southern Europe.
