These exotic leaves unroll from the leaf-mould in late autumn, continuing to grow throughout the winter, bowing beneath bitter frost, but standing undamaged immediately it thaws. By April they are full height, dark glossy green, spear-shaped, and veined with ivory. In September, above the bare earth, appear stems of red berries. Caution toxic if eaten. Potential skin and eye irritant.
