Pilosella

Represented in the UK with various mouse-ear hawkweeds and the pretty fox & cubs. Herbaceous perennials, often spreading, flowerheads like dandelions, yellow, or as with P. aurantiaca an zingy orange.

Fox-and-cubs is something of an outlier in this genus because of its flower colour, and it is now one of the most widely naturalized non-native species, spreading by means of both stolons and seeds. The heads of tiny flowers are very attractive to hoverflies, pollen-beetles, small bees and butterflies, and while the seeds are still attached to the heads, they are rich pickings for linnets and goldfinches.
