A large, 500 plus, group of annuals and perennials, from across the world. Some used for traditional lawns, but there are a good number of attractive, tussock-forming species with suit a herbaceous border. Good flowers and often glaucous-blue foliage, similar to its relative Festuca.
As with all tussocky grasses, the tussocks, especially if not cut back too hard in autumn, are of value to overwintering insects, particularly beneficial ones such as ladybirds.
