Rodgersia
Moisture loving members of the saxifrage family mostly valued for their handsome foliage. All produce a slowly expanding clump of creeping root and have horse chestnut like foliage often darkly tinted as it emerges. Flowers are borne on separate stems and if left standing when over will last well into the winter. They will grow in sun if the soil is moist, also in shade if the soil doesn't dry out. They spread slowly by rhizomes.
The exuberant sprays of flowers attract pollinators, including bumblebees, honeybees and hoverflies, and the leaves offer refuge for invertebrates and amphibians in a damp location. Being capable of dominating large patches with its rhizomatous growth and dense foliage, it should not be allowed out the confines of gardens.
