Spiraea

Varying substantially in flower form, Spiraea species are normally low shrubs. Those with white flowers (bridal-wreaths) tend to have flattened or rounded heads of larger flowers, whereas the pink-flowered ones form dense, frothy pyramidal spikes of smaller flowers. Irrespective, all are much visited by flies and other pollinating insects The taxonomy of the genus is far from clear but several species are now widespread in the wild in Britain and Ireland as a result of ornamental plantings and garden throw-outs. Steps should be taken to restrict their escape from the confines of gardens.
