Uncinia
The hook sedges are closely related to Carex, with evergreen, colourful, low-growing, foliage. Ranging from green, to orange, to red, varying at different times of the year. They naturally enjoy cooler climates, so in the UK they enjoy a shady position, particularly during the hotter summer months. However, more sun should intensify the foliage colour! Good for pots. Dark brown flowers, with hook-like fruits.
As with true Carex sedges, the foliage of Uncinia species is relatively unpalatable but sometimes tussocky growth forms may be of some value, providing shelter to insects and other invertebrates, many of which are valuable natural predators in the garden.
