An aromatic perennial, related to dead nettle. In spring and early summer are produced upright spires of pink and white flowers. The unfortunately named bastard balm (due to its resemblance to true balm, Melissa officnialis) is a rare UK native (mainly the south west) and across Europe. Best in part shade, in a reasonable soil.
