A terrestrial orchid from East Canada to Florida where it grows in wet coastal ditches. From a basal rosette of narrow leaves arise stems carrying fragrant, white tubular chubby flowers, waxen in texture, arranged spirally around the upper half of the stem. In flower for weeks, autumn, needing humus-rich, moisture retentive soil in part shade.
