Rainfall update
After the installation of our new MET Office rain gauge by the Hydrometry team from the Environment Agency (read about it here) we wanted to update you on the rainfall results as we near the end of the year.
We moved from weekly to daily recordings in August and the data from this year has been very interesting compared with recent years. Notably we also had two named storms reach the garden here in Essex - Agnes 27th - 28th September and Babet 18th - 21st October that added to our totals.
Our total at the end of November 2023 is 822.5mm. This is a vast amount compared to the previous few years, with a month still to record.
2023: 882.5mm
2022: 514mm
2021: 617mm
2020: 577mm
2019: 560mm
Our recent highest total was recorded in 2014 with a total 832mm. It’s difficult to say if this year's record is unusual and amounts will return to our average over the next few years, or if the higher numbers will continue to come. What we noticed here in the garden is that the storms and rainfall we have had has often been torrential but short lived, with lots of rain falling before quickly moving away. We have rarely seen sustained days of rain. We’ll update you with the final 2023 year total and continue to share what we record.
