In the Gardens

It’s that time of year when sunshine, showers, wind and even frost can all make an appearance on the same day, keeping us all on our toes! After a very dry start to the year, it’s a relief to have the traditional April showers bringing much needed rain, even if it has sent the Gardeners running for cover on a few occasions.

Sheltering from the rain!

With the temperature slightly milder, the team donned their waders and ventured into the ponds to cut down the remnants of last season’s growth. Hollie, Hannah and Malin can be seen removing the stems of Thalia dealbata to just below the water level using old pruning saws. Now is also the perfect time to reduce the clumps of some of the more vigorous water plants to keep them from outgrowing their space. Depending on the plant, this is best done using either garden forks or spades back-to-back in the same way that you would split herbaceous perennials in a garden border. For those very stubborn clumps, the best way through them is with a trusty old wood saw.

Propagation

Seedlings, cuttings and potted-on divisions are all growing at a pace, helped on by warmer weather and an increase in light. Keeping a close eye on this precious offspring is a full time job at this time of year; are they recieving enough moisture, light and heat, are they free from pests and diseases or do they need potting on?

This important juggling act is performed by our incredibly knowledgable propagation team, always on hand to respond to the forever changing conditions and to the needs of the plants which require a little more TLC at this vulnerable stage in their production.

Following Beth's methods, all of our cuttings are raised in peat free compost
topped with a layer of sharp sand to prevent the leaves coming into contact

Mailorder

With planting season upon us, the Mail Order Team are working incredibly hard to pick, pack and send all of our precious plants onto their forever homes. After their long journey with us; selecting propagating material from choice plants in Beth's Garden, nurturing them through their growing stages and finally deciding we are happy to release them for sale, it's imperative that we make sure our plants arrive safely to your door, ready for you to plant in your garden and enjoy for many years to come.

'I really don't get involved in writing reviews, I just want to say thank you to you and your team for the hard work that must have gone into ensuring the complete process runs smoothly.  And in my case there wasn't a snapped stem or a yellow or brown leaf. Their condition was perfect when I received them yesterday. I'm just looking forward to a summers day in a couple of years time when I'll be emersed in a summers day, with a beer and Beth's beautiful flowers.'

It's always a pleasure to get my Beth Chatto boxes as they are beautifully packed which is crucial. The boxes themselves are very strong and secure. Every grower I buy from tries to pack well but if the box is weak it's a disaster. Courier companies have many adventures. It may seem a small point but one weak box and dozens of plants can be damaged. You are better than Waitrose Garden which is saying something.
