Cotinus

The tiny flowers amid billowing smoke-like inflorescences do attract insects including small bees and some butterflies. However they do not seem to be especially attractive in comparison with some of the wide range of other species available in the garden at their peak flowering time. Likewise the array of chemicals in the leaves, some of which are used medicinally, are designed to reduce their likelihood of being eaten by insects
