Above broad strap-like evergreen leaves (maybe herbaceous in colder winters) stand upturned heads of double flowers, shaded light and dark violet-blue. Buds can be reluctant to open, but it is still very attractive and an excellent addition to the garden. Needs sheltered position and good drainage. Known from France in 1878 and probably introduced to England in 1885.
Synonym A. praecox 'Flore Pleno', A. africanus 'Flore Pleno'.
