Gunnera tinctoria
Giant rhubarb
SKU: 3956Differs from G. manicata in having more rounded, deeply lobed leaves, while the leaf stalks are not so tall. A more obvious difference is in the seedhead. In G. tinctoria the primaeval-looking seedhead resembles a densely knobby club, while the fruiting spike of G. manicata has long, narrow side shoots, separated, like fingers. Protect the resting buds in winter, with their own foliage bent over, along with bracken or other herbaceous material.
We are no longer selling Gunnera tinctoria, as it is classed as an invasive alien species (under EU legislation, which is still applicable in the UK), meaning it is banned for sale here. We will also take measures to control them in our garden, by removing the flowerheads before they set seed.
